Michael Menzies is a social entrepreneur who works in several segments of the food products industry. His passion is developing connections between growers, raw products and innovative foods.
After seeing a migration away from small-scale, sustainable food production Michael knew he had to get more involved in farming food. Using his experience in the fields of environmental economics, community development and small scale agriculture, he created Braeside Farms, LLC to provide sustainably grown, nutritious food to hundreds of households in
Oregon. Since 2000 the farm has grown to be a major player in the local food movement. Braeside Farms boasts a client base throughout NW Oregon and SW Washington. The farming system developed by Braeside Farms has become wildly popular with beginning farmers, giving them the best possible chance of succeeding with new farm ventures.
On his website,
www.braesidefarmscsa.com, Michael shares his insider knowledge about how to develop a small farm business and promote local food development systems. Called the “superhero of the small farming industry,” Michael advocates for innovation and teamwork to fend of market grabbing efforts of big agriculture companies.
In 2007 Michael decided to pursue an interest in a new venture, a small craft beer brewery and distillery on his farm in Oregon. However, onerous regulations from local, state and federal governments motivated him to look abroad for new opportunities in the food innovation business. As of May 2012, Michael has decided to sell the small organic farm in Oregon, move to the Caribbean and start a new food innovation business.
