Ken Phillips

Ken Phillips is co-founder and Executive Director of Independent Contractors of Australia (Trading as Self Employed Australia).

He has been a small business operator and consultant for more than 35 years. He conducts research, commentary and advocacy on small business issues.

Ken is a published authority on independent contractor issues being a regular media commentator in Australia, a contributor to several books on economic and management issues and author of Independence and the Death of Employment.

He was ICA's representative at the 2003 and 2006 International Labour Organisation debate on the 'Scope of Employment Relationship.' The ILO outcomes formed the conceptual basis for Australia's Independent Contractors Act.

He led the advocacy of ICA for the Australian small business unfair contract laws that came into effect in late 2016.

Ken has a high interest in and knowledge of tax administration issues as they impact on small business. Since 2015 Ken has coordinated assistance for small businesses in their endeavors for tax justice. He has consequently become a profile advocate for reform of Australia’s tax administration system as it impacts small business people.
